The Deep South Spring Scrimmage (counterpart to the Deep South Star Gaze) begins in 10 days. It is, it has been and it will be a great opportunity to check out dark skies and different telescopes.
While the Spring Scrimmage begins on Thursday, April 27th and runs to Sunday, April 30th, there is absolutely no requirement that registrants have to attend for all 4 days and 3 nights. For both the Spring Scrimmage and the DSSG, attendees "attend" for varying lengths of time. It is not unusual to have an attendee come up to either event and stay just one night or even come up and spend most of the day and just several hours under dark skies before returning home. The Spring Scrimmage has no registration fee per se like the DSSG does. (The Registration Fee is used to support the purchase of door prizes and to pay for any other fees we may have beyond payment for lodging and meals. As we do not do door prizes at the Spring Scrimmage there are no registration fees.)
What costs are there? If you are purchasing lodging or buying meals (meals have to be purchased in advance) there are fees as per our registration form. If you are not doing meals or lodging and just coming up for a day and staying for part of an evening, their is a "day use" fee which we turn over to the Feliciana Retreat Center. It is $5 per attendee. (Note to those who have registered - if you paid for lodging of any kind including tent camping, there is no "day use" fee. Some of you paid that anyway. I will have your refund for you for that when you arrive at the Feliciana Retreat Center.)
So given the affordability of attending, the excellence of the facility, the darkness of the skies (6.5 limiting naked eye magnitude on excellent nights) and the opportunity to evaluate different types of telescopes - why not attend?
